Telepathy was a human term for the communication of messages or thoughts directly from one mind to another without the use of "ordinary" vocal and auditory mechanisms. It was often used to include extrasensory empathy (the ability to sense the emotions of another beings).
The treecats of the planet Sphinx in the Manticore System were telepathic, communicating exclusivly through the use of their "mind-voices", as well as highly empathic. (HH1)
Some humans, including several members of the Harrington Clan, showed latent telepathic and empathic abilities, possibly augmented through prolonged contact with treecats. (HHA6: BATB, TBLP)
