causes of Dolism[]
DW has taken an authorial position, by faint implication, that a welfare situation such as the Dolist endured was morally detrimental, and resulted in permanent and hereditary welfare status. Whether he feels that way or not, he does not say that this is the condition and causation of the Dolist situation. IN recounting the history of Haven, he suggests that an urge for social improvement overran the economic ability to support it. He further says that similar motives, however well-meaning, effectively ruined the educational system, and block paths out of the Dolist category. Under those conditions, politicians (with the too common urge for fixing the system so they could stay in office and distribute goodies to friends and others) acted so as to benefit themselves (and others) and not the public good -- which, he implies would have been to educate and train as many Dolists as possible so they could return to productive citizenship), thus setting up conditions which perpetuated the Dolists' situation across generations.
We are not entitled, though DW may perhaps agree, to conclude that the Dolists lack of ambition (and drag on the economy) was the cause of Haven's economic troubles. He does state clearly that the Manticoran system (which also has significant and unique economic advantages) is more productive, and that this is one of the reasons it was able to fight a much larger opponent to a standstill over an extended war. Therefore, I don't think we should write our articles to embody that attitude.
I've revised this article somewhat to remove anything which suggest such a conclusion. Wikipedia ww 19:52, January 17, 2010 (UTC)
What is the difference between a dolist and a prole? I thought they were the same thing, and then in "In Enemy Hands" RSP POV: "Its members were careful to display their confidence to the Dolists and Proles they'd mobilized, but Pierre....."
