Martin Gogunov was a Solarian citizen and a flag officer of the Solarian League Navy.

Biography[]

Gogunov came from a family with a long and proud tradition of military service. At least four of his siblings were also Naval officers. His oldest brother died in the Battle of Spindle, while the youngest one was killed in the Second Battle of Manticore.

In 1922 PD, he held the rank of Rear Admiral and was commanding officer of Battlecruiser Squadron 4012 as well as ninth in the chain of command of Task Force 1030, flying his flag aboard SLNS Lepanto. During the Battle of Hypatia, command fell to him after Admiral Hajdu's flagship was destroyed by enemy missile fire. Gogunov decided to continue with the execution of Operation Buccaneer, proving willing to kill hundreds of thousands of Hypatian civilians. When his flag captain refused to carry out this violation of the Eridani Edict, he had her removed from her post and placed under arrest.

Before Buccaneer could be carried out, HMS Lepanto's flag bridge was destroyed by missile fire from the sole surviving Manticoran ship, and Admiral Gogunov was left trapped in his command chair with a broken skinsuit comm system; he non-verbally ordered his chief of staff, Commodore Sandra Haskell, to launch Buccaneer, but she refused, instead letting command fall down to Rear Admiral Thomas Yountz, who eventually retreated to the hyper limit without destroying Hypatia's space stations.

Gogunov and Haskell were eventually rescued and taken prisoners of war by the Grand Alliance. (HH14)
