Johnny Funk was a Manticoran citizen and a non-commissioned officer of the Royal Manticoran Marine Corps.
Holding the rank of Gunner's Mate First Class in 1529 PD, he served as a platoon commander at the Casey-Rosewood Instructional Center on Manticore. He was hard and demanding on his recruits, including Travis Long, but also came to their defense when officers tried to unjustly punish them.
By 1532 PD, he was reassigned to the Patrol and Rescue Service's experimental sloop HMS Phobos. He was killed along with the rest of the crew when the ship was destroyed by harmonic stress on the hull while trying to come to the rescue of the mining ship Rafe's Scavenger. (MA1)
