Humans were a species of bipedal primates in the family Hominidae (taxonomically Homo sapiens, Latin for "wise human" or "knowing human").
Humans had a highly developed brain, capable of abstract reasoning, language, introspection and problem solving. This mental capability, combined with an erect body carriage that freed the forelimbs (arms) for manipulating objects, allowed them to make far greater use of tools than any other species on Earth.
The DNA-based genetic code of the human species could be altered in a number of ways commonly refered to as genetic engineering. Once humans had found out how to achieve this, a number of genetic alterations on humans like the Meyerdahl First Wave and the Winton modification were developed to encrease physical strength or mental capabilities. DNA evidence indicated that modern humans originated in the east of the African continent about 200,000 years BCE.
Soon members of the species were distributed planetwide, with large populations inhabiting every continent on except Antarctica. As of that time, they were a dominant form of biological life, in terms of their distribution and effect on the biosphere.
With the creation of spacefaring technology, humans began to colonize a vast number of planets surounding their solar system, a millenia-long process later known as the Diaspora of Man. By the 20th Century PD, trillions of humans lived in the area of the Solarian League alone. (HH1, HH2)
- The human population on Earth was greater than 6.5 billion around 2000 CE.
