The Gryphon class was the last class of conventional superdreadnoughts built by the Royal Manticoran Navy prior to the advent of pod-laying warships.

The class was developed before the break of hostilities between the Star Kingdom of Manticore and the People's Republic of Haven, as a follow-up to the preceding Sphinx-class superdreadnoughts. (HH3, HH6)

At the time of their design and construction, the Gryphon-class vessels were considered to be the most advanced and powerful warships in the entire human-settled galaxy. (HH5)
