The Genetic Advancement and Uplift League, or GAUL, was a special security force for the higher echelons of the Mesan Alignment. Its agents and enforcers were referred to as "Gauls".
When Operation Houdini commenced in mid-1922 PD, GAUL agents Seleven Arpino and Anthony Zhilov escorted a number of Alignment scientists off Mesa. When one of the slaver ships transporting them was intercepted by the Royal Torch Navy, Agent Arpino killed the scientists and blew up the ship, destroying himself and any trace of the Alignment's activities.
