ENS (formerly PNS and later GSNS) Barbarossa was a Warlord-class battlecruiser built and originally operated by the State Security Naval Forces before her capture by the "Elysian Space Navy".
Service Record[]
In October 1913 PD, PNS Barbarossa[1] was one of six battlecruisers in Major General Prestwick Thornegrave's Seabring reinforcement expedition, which had been assembled to secure the recently-recaptured system from any possible Manticoran attack or uprising of the local population.
Barbarossa was ordered to surrender by Admiral Honor Harrington, who had led an uprising among the inmate population of Hades which had succeeded in defeating the planet's State Security garrison. With no other available choice (especially after the destruction of PNS Attila by Hades' orbital defenses), Barbarossa surrendered to the rebels along the other surviving ships of Thornegrave's expedition.
After her surrender, Barbarossa became a part of the prisoners' "Elysian Space Navy" of captured StateSec vessels, and Lieutenant Commander Geraldine Metcalf was assigned to command the battlecruiser. (HH8)
Barbarossa participated in the Battle of Cerberus and along the heavy cruiser ENS Krashnark destroyed the Havenite heavy cruiser PNS Rapier and captured the two Roughneck-class troop transports which had joined General Seth Chernock's task force. After the battle, Barbarossa and the rest of the Elysian Space Navy embarked as many former inmates as she could and left the Cerberus System to join the Allied forces in Trevor's Star.
Shortly arriving at Trevor's Star, ENS Barbarossa and the rest of the ESN's ships was incorporated into the brand-new "Protector's Own Squadron" of the Grayson Space Navy. (HH9)

- ↑ The word "Barbarossa" comes from the Italian language, meaning "red beard". The ship was likely named after either Emperor Frederick I of the Holy Roman Empire, or Ottoman corsair Aruj, both of whom were known as "Barbarossa".
