The dog was a domesticated form of the wolf, a carnivorous mammal native to Earth. The domestic dog was one of the most widely kept working and companion animals in human history, a tradition that lived on into the Post Diaspora era.
There were many different kinds of dogs, most of them bred for specific purposes.
"Dog" was also a common part of nicknames, like in the Grayson 5019th Special Battalion, which was known as the "Orbit Dogs", or in the term hyper-dog. (HH9, HHA4.6: TSotS)
Breeds of dogs[]
Golden Retriever[]
The Golden Retriever was historically developed as a gundog to retrieve shot waterfowl and upland game birds during hunting and shooting parties. They were also one of the most popular breeds for a family pet and service animal. Honor Harrington's parents owned one when she was growing up. Nimitz learned to play with a frisbee by watching Alfred Harrington throw it with the dog. (HH2)
Irish Setter[]
The Irish Setter was a breed of gun and family dog. Stephanie Harrington once watched her father treat a setter that had lost a leg to a robotic cultivator. (HHA1.1: ABF)
Mastiff[]
The Mastiff, also called Molosser, was kept as a pet for companionship and protection, and was so known to be loyal and protective of their masters that the term "protective as a mastiff" was given to people when they exhibited extreme loyalty to a person.
In 1903 PD, Captain Honor Harrington compared James MacGuiness to a mastiff in the "protective" sense of the word. (HH2)
Rottweiler[]
The Rottweiler was originally known as "Rottweil butchers' dog", because they were used to herd livestock and pull carts laden with butchered meat and other products to market in ancient Germany. Ms. Steinman owned a Rottweiler named Brutus. (SK1)
