The Calvin's Hope was a sub-light multi-generational colony ship launched from Earth in the early days of the Diaspora of Man.
Angelique Calvin, who disapproved of the Earth Union's isolationist policies, personally designed the engine of the ship, and chose its destination, the Earth-like third planet of KCR-126-04. The Calvin's Hope started its long voyage towards the distant star, which its crew renamed Calvin in their late leader's honor. However, years before their descendants arrived on Calvin III, the planet was hit by two asteroids, destroying much of its biosphere and making it all but uninhabitable. The Calvin's Hope was redirected to the Refuge System and parked in orbit of its habitable second planet, now named Sanctuary. The vessel was stripped of everything the colonists could use, leaving only an empty hull behind.
Many centuries later, the ship's remains were coincidentally found by the People's Republic of Haven, leading to the rediscovery of the Sanctuary colony. (DF)
