Angelique Calvin was a citizen of the Earth Union in the early days of the Diaspora of Man.
Disgruntled with what she considered a "poisoned" political atmosphere, she spearheaded the launch of a colonial expedition to a distant star aboard a sub-light generation ship. After personally designing the vessel's drive and examining numerous candidate planets, she eventually settled on KCR-126-04, a system that was eventually renamed Calvin in her honor. Its third planet appeared like a perfect candidate for colonization at the time.
Calvin herself stayed behind and died before the colony ship Calvin's Hope departed, having known there was no place for a woman in her eighties on an interstellar expedition. She never learned how Calvin III's biosphere was destroyed by two meteor impacts, and how her family and the other colonists she sent into space eventually settled on the planet Sanctuary. (DF)
