Biography[]

Kagiyama was born on Manticore. In the early 20th Century PD, he attended the Royal Manticoran Naval Academy on Saganami Island, where he became friends with fellow cadets Helen Zilwicki and Ragnhild Pavletic. They spent a lot of time together, and were once caught sneaking off the campus. After they graduated, they all went on their Midshipman cruise aboard the newly commissioned heavy cruiser HMS Hexapuma; Kagiyama was originally scheduled for HMS Intransigent, but for some reason his assignment was changed in the last minute.

After joining Hexapuma's crew, he was assigned to the Tactical Branch as the vessel set course for the Talbott Cluster. He first saw combat action in the Battle of Nuncio.

During their stay in the Montana System, he discovered that there was something odd about the freighter Golden Butterfly, leading his commanding officer, Captain Aivars Terekhov, to send a pinnace to investigate. This pinnace was destroyed by the freighter, which was in fact an armed Mesan slaver, killing all aboard including Ragnhild Pavletic.

Kagiyama was devastated, feeling responsible for Pavletic's death. His superior officers did their best to keep him too busy to think about it in the following days. Commander Ansten Fitzgerald took him with him aboard the freighter Copenhagen, which they used to enter the Monica System and conduct a sensor sweep with a recoverable recon drone. After this mission, they rejoined Hexapuma's crew, and Aigawa ended up fighting in the Battle of Monica, which he, unlike many others, survived.

He later returned to the Manticore System aboard Hexapuma, and was present when the ship was welcomed by Queen Elizabeth III and the Home Fleet. (SI1, SI2)

By 1922 PD, he was still assigned to Hexapuma, but survived its destruction during the Mesan Alignment Navy's Operation Oyster Bay because he was on leave at the time. (HH12)
